This will stop Banefire - BayushiKazemi is correct. If a spell has an illegal target(s), it counters itself, whether or not it says it cannot be countered.

hmm, anti-banefire perhaps,
question: since you have protection from red, and banefire is unpreventable, what ends up happening?
either banefire fails
or
protection doesnt protect
so either this is a banefire counter, or banefire can be used to destroy cards like progenitcis

607.2b is talking about replacement effects, and exiled cards. Nothing to do with countering uncounterable spells.

About Banefire. It's pretty clear. Banefire can't be countered by spells or abilities. It says that because it can be countered by the rules for no having legal targets.

Another card that is excellent because of its versatility.
It deals with cards that target you as a player IE discard and burn. It can fog and it can flash in a 3/3, which is often enough pretty relevant.
Best paired with Momentary Blink and countermagic.
